Definition of New Literacies

  1. In both readings the authors use the word "mindset" to define new literacies. It would seem that new literacies are less bound by physical, linear approaches and are more fluid in time and space, with more possibilities. The authors talked about new literacies being more of a shared experience. I liked that they seemed to think that it was beneficial for educators to have experience of both mindsets, mainly to raise critical literacy to assist our students to become agents rather than consumers.

  2. I like the comment you made Jennifer about it being more of a shared experience. I also like the fact that it doesn't appear to throw out the old mindset but experiences both - It appears to me that New Literacies is the not the doing of the same things in a different way but enagagin different technologies to teach in a different way. It is recognising the value of not only the physical world but those things in cyberspace as being just as relevant or even more relevant. This is strange for someone of my vintage and takes a bit of getting my head around it. Web 2.0 is a whole new world to me but there is the realiseation that this is the world of our students- not necessarily my students in Year 2 but certainly those of older years and will soon be a major part of students in Year 2.

  3. I agree with Jennifer New Literacies is about a shared experience between multiple parties. It is not just about using 'technical stuff' to show others 'things', but using it to construct and build upon and to share and co-construct with others.

  4. Knobel and Lankshear highlight that 'new literacies' involve discussion of 2 points. The first of a technical nature and the second an "ethos" nature. I think we often talk about new literacies in relation to technology,we often dismiss the "ethos" nature behind this. The 2 "ethos" mindsets that they describe are important to relfect upon when thinking about "new literacies". The first mindset- that the world is basically the same only it has developed in technology I think can be a common view by teachers. The second mindset - seeing the world as changed and that it is necessary to take a differernt approach, we as teachers are compelled to reflect on. If the world is continually changing we as educators are required and responsible for equipping students with literacy skills that will enable them to function in this world and assist them in the future.

  5. New literacies are a key part of why the world has changed. Students of today are not isolated in any way but participate and collaborate with students in the physical classroom and around the world. As teachers we need to be aware and familiar with these new technologies. To be the best teacher we can to support our students we need to reflect on the changes in technology (which are continual) and our mindset so we include these new literacies in our curriculum.

  6. As Jennifer stated, the authors discuss new literacies being a shared experience, where collaboration and collective works are the norm. I share your view Jennifer in that we want our students to be agents rather than consumers, with the ability to navigate their way through a plethora of multimodal texts!   9. Yes once upon I time we would not have connected as teachers from accross the country to share and develope our understandings of New Literacies. Yes Jennifer we have are proof that they are shared!

  10. It has been my experience that our students are much better at using digital literacies than we are, (than I am anyway). I think that in this instance the teachers may have a lot more to learn from our students.
